Suffering from Insomnia could mean having difficulty getting to sleep, an inability to stay asleep throughout the night and waking for no apparent reason, or waking far too early in the morning. There have been times, in the past, when I have seen every hour on the clock throughout the night!
The first thing you need to do is rule out any obvious causes, such as too much caffeine, too much stimulation prior to sleep e.g. watching a thriller, sorting finances, overeating or eating too late in the day or anything else you can think of that may be keeping you awake. Also, make sure your room is for sleeping – we like to attribute certain functions to certain rooms, and having a television in a bedroom is not conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Having ruled out all of the obvious causes, it’s worth consulting your GP to rule out any medical problems. Insomnia is often caused by anxiety, maybe even anxiety you are not fully aware of. Stress may have built up over a period of time and the inability to sleep causes further stress – it’s a vicious circle. Hypnotherapy can help by addressing the underlying anxiety and helping you to get a good night’s sleep.
